Malawi vs Uganda
Monday, March 29, 2021
Kamuzu Banda stadium, Blantyre 4pm (EAT)
Uganda Cranes have all to play for this evening in the final match of Group B of the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The squad touched down in Malawi yesterday afternoon aboard a chartered Uganda Airlines flight.
The Cranes go into this match knowing that a draw of whatever kind will guarantee qualification but should have it in mind that Malawi will be looking for maximum points to achieve the same feat and will put up stiff competition and strong performance to try to win this match.
Uganda are second in Group B on eight points one behind leaders Burkina Faso, and Malawi are third on seven points, one behind today’s opponents Uganda. Uganda expect big performances from star players like captain Dennis Onyango, attacking midfielder Faruku Miya, Left back Joseph Ochaya and forward Emmanuel Okwi among others.
It should be noted that the two countries have met 29 times in different competitions previously, and Uganda Cranes have the upper hand having won 15 times, drawn six and lost eight. In AFCON/World Cup qualifiers, the two countries have met five times and Uganda has won four times and lost once.
The AFCON final tournament will be hosted by Cameroon in January 2022, having been postponed from this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
