The National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential contender Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine has vowed that he will return to Kalangala District on Friday to hold his campaigns there, after he was blocked by the police and army last week.
Bobi Wine, who was speaking Tuesday January 5th, 2021 during a press conference held at the NUP headquarters in Kamwokya, Kampala, said that that come rain or shine, he has to hold campaigns in Kalangala.
“Last time on December 30th the police and army blocked me from addressing our people in Kalangala Islands. However, come Friday January 8th, 2020 I shall be in Kalangala to address our supporters.”
He added that; “We have written to the Electoral Commission informing them of our planned campaigns but they have not replied our letter yet.”
It should be noted that Bobi Wine was arrested and later airlifted from Kalangala back to his home in Magere after he was blocked by the police and military from holding campaigns in Kalangala, which is of the districts in which the Electoral Commission suspended campaigns in a bid to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Following Bobi Wine’s arrest in Kalangala, several of his supporters together with journalists who were covering his campaign trail were arrested and although some were granted bail on Monday many still languish in various prisons and detention centres in greater Masaka.
However, it is not yet clear whether the police and military will allow Bobi Wine to campaign again in Kalangala, because his acts will be in total defiance of the Electoral Commission’s directives.
