Our neighbours in the south, Tanzania are currently engulfed in sadness after the news of the confirmation of the death of their president John Pombe Magufuli.
The news of Magufuli’s passing has been read out by Vice President Samia Suluhu on the national broadcaster, Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC).
At the time of his passing, Magufuli, 61, has been receiving treatment in Dar Es Salaam. Mgufuli was last seen in public on February 26, and he has been in hospitals in Nairobi, Keny, and was reportedly flown to India to receive more treatment before being flown back to Tanzania.
Although the Tanzanian government vehemently denied it, it has been extensively rumoured that Magufuli, who had in the past year denied that there is COVID-19 in his country, was battling the same disease. Rumours of his death first appeared last week, but they were refuted by the Tanzanian government, and some people who requested information regarding his health status were arrested by authorities.
John Pombe Magufuli was born on October 29, 1959, and he has been the fifth President of Tanzania, in office since 2015. He was the chairman of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) from 2019–2020.
