The court in Manafwa District, Eastern Uganda, has sentenced a convicted rapist to 15 years and fined him Shs50M for inflicting grave injuries on his victim.
Esther Karugi, the Bubulo Chief Magistrate, on Tuesday sentenced Derrick Kuloba to 15 years in jail and demanded that he pays Shs50M as compensation to the family of his victim Evelyn Namasopo, 16.

According to sources, Kuloba has been battling with the charges since July 2019, when he was arrested for hacking Namasopo’s hand after she fought him off as he attempted to rape her.
Namasopo, a student who is a resident of Nakatsi sub-county in Bududa District, said that when she rejected Kuloba’s sexual advances he attempted rape her prompting her to put up a spirited fight.

During the scuffle that ensued, Kuloba, who was armed with a panga, chopped off Namasopo’s left hand, before injuring her right hand and other parts of the body.
Later when she returned home with the injuries, her parents rushed to police and reported the matter and a hunt for Kuloba was launched until he was arrested and charged with aggravated rape and attempted murder.
