“The East African Regional Force shall be deployed to the Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu provinces immediately to stabilize the zone and enforce peace in support of the DRC security forces and in close coordination with MONUSCO,” a statement from the Kenyatta issued Wednesday reads in part.

“The regional force will work with local provincial authorities to support an orderly and permanent disarmament process under the Programme de Desarmement, Demobilisation, Relevement Communautaire et Stabilisation (P-DDRCS) in order to create enabling conditions towards stability and peace in the eastern DRC,” Kenyatta added.

Kenyatta’s directive comes at a time when Rwanda-backed M23 rebels are wreaking havoc in Eastern DR Congo, where they have already captured the Bunagaga township and several other parts of Eastern DR Congo.

Meanwhile, following the heavy fighting that broke out last week in Eastern DR Congo, several Congolese civilians and soldiers have sine fled into Uganda seeking refuge.
