The National Unity Platform (NUP) which made an alliance recently with People Power pressure group has started encountering conflicts within its structures, just a few months before the 2021 general election.
Our sources with the party reveal singer turned politician Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleone, who is also a Democratic Party (DP) mobilizer contesting for the Kampala Lord Mayoral seat, is conflicting with NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, who is a presidential contender and legislator for Kyadondo East constituency.
Intelligence from within NUP indicates that Chameleone and Bobi Wine disagreed about confirmation of the People Power flag bearer for the Kampala Lord Mayor position in the forthcoming general election.
According to our Moles, Bobi sat in a private meeting with Chameleone last week during which he assured the Leone Island boss that he is not ready to support him for the Lord Mayor seat against the incumbent Hajji Elias Lukwago, who is contesting on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket, because FDC and NUP have an unwritten non-aggression treaty.
Our Moles reveal that Bobi Wine told Chameleone during the said meeting that the People Power Election Committee reserves the mandate to declare the red beret flag bearers so he should forget about the Kampala Lord Mayor seat and perhaps contest for another position.
It is said that Bobi Wine told Chameleone that even if he picked the nomination forms, the NUP treaty with FDC means they can’t back another candidate against Lukwago.
He thus advised him to go and contest in one the constituencies in Mityana where they will back him as a People Power flag bearer for a Member of Parliament seat.
However, our Moles reveal that the news left Chameloene very shocked because he had already expressed his interest in the Kampala Lord Mayor seat and published campaign posters for the same.
It should be noted that although he had officially joined DP, Chameleone kept associating with the People Power movement and a few days ago he picked People Power nomination forms from their head offices in Kamwokya to contest against Lord Mayor Lukwago. But Bobi Wine is not ready to see this happen or even back him up, something that has created a sharp division between the two close friends, who are both musicians turned polticians.
