The First Son, who also doubles as the Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC) and Presidential Advisor on Special Operations Lt Gen Muhoozi Kinerugaba has this morning of Tuesday, March 16, 2021, taken the first jab of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

The outspoken General took the jab as the Ministry of Helth kicked off the COVID-19 vaccination campaign for the SFC officers. It should be noted that the Ministry identified frontline health workers, teachers, journalists and essential military officers as the top priority groups of people to be vaccinated.

Muhoozi has tweeted about the exercise thus: “Today, it was my pleasure to open the COVID-19 vaccination campaign within SFC by taking my first shot of AstraZeneca vaccine. I thank H.E. Kaguta Museveni, the Ministry of Health and our development partners for the quick acquisition and roll-out of this vaccine,” and signed off with his initials MK.

This comes at a time when the public is still sceptical about the efficacy of the vaccine in light of the reports that several counties like Denmark, Austria among others suspended the administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine to their people due to side effects like blood clots.

While addressing the country on issues of national importance on Sunday, March 14, 2021, President Yoweri Museveni said that he had not taken the vaccine because he was yet to make a decision on which vaccine to take.

Gen Muhoozi’s decision to take the jab is thought to increase public confidence in the vaccine, as the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Frank Tumwebaze noted in a tweet, “Congrats Gen Muhooi Kainerugaba on taking the COVID Vaccine. Your decision helps to bolster public confidence and buy-in. Congratulations to the Ministry of Health for this vaccination rollout.”
