At least three people are confirmed to have died Tuesday night in a fatal accident that occurred in Bukedea District, which involved a bus belonging to Gateway Bus Company crashed with another bus.
According to ASP Faridah Nampiima, the Traffic Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), the territorial Police in Bukedea on 14th June 2022, at round 21:40PM, registered a fatal accident involving an Isuzu bus registration number UAR 293M, belonging to Wanagon coaches and another bus, a Nissan registration number UAH 781Z belonging to Gateway Bus Service.
Nampiima said that ; “The accident happened at Kachumbala village along Mbale-Soroti highway in Bukedea district. The Gateway bus was travelling from Soroti side, while the Wanagon bus was from Mbale side.”
“Two male adults died on spot while one female adult died on her way to Kumi Orthopaedic Center,” Nampiima added.
She revealed the police rescued 35 victims who included 20 male adults, 10 female adults, four male juveniles, and one female juvenile who were rushed to Mbale Referral Hospital and Kumi Orthopedic Center.
Preliminary findings indicate that the cause of the accident was by the Gateway Bus driver who tried to overtake the Wanagon bus in the sharp corner but failed to keep his to side, hence Knocking crashing into it head-on.
Nampiima noted however that the Gateway bus driver fled the scene shortly after accident and a hunt for him is already on.
However, the Wanagon bus driver who has since been identified as Said Rashid was rushed to Mbale Referral Hospital for medical attention as investigations into the matter continue.
