Popular Ugandan singer Gero Geosteady surprised many of his fans on Thursday when a video and photos of him converting to Islam in the presence of friends and respected clerics were posted on social media.
In the short clip posted on his Facebook page, the ‘Wakyuka’ singer is seen in a mosque sitting in front of a Muslim cleric, who asks him his name and he replies that he is called George Kigozi.
The cleric, dressed on a black Muslim garb and cap, asks him what Islamic name he would like to be named he quickly replies ‘Hassan’, before the cleric holds his hand and tells him in vernacular recite the following words; “Bismillahi Rahman Rahim.” The video ends just as soon he says those worlds.
However, fans and followers were quick to react to the news. Although devoted Muslims were pleasantly surprised by the news and left glowing comments wishing him the best in life, his Christian followers didn’t share the same enthusiasm.
Some sarcastically asked him if he had consulted singer Jose Chameleone who converted to Islam years ago and later changed his mind.
Others left comments implying he has made such life changing decision perhaps because he is deeply in love with a Muslim girl.
It should be remembered that the singer who rose to fame in 2013 with a rendition of Elly Wamala’s song ‘Viola’, broke up with his long term baby mama only identified as Prima Kardash late last year, after he had hooked himself a side-dish identified as Lilly Lianah.
