The previous two years have been golden for Ugandan long distance runner Joshua Cheptegei, no seriously; he has won several gold medals some of which included him breaking several records.
Cheptegei’s heroics have been appreciated by Ugandans and the government alike, but his success had not brought him fat endorsement deals like those athletes in “outside countries”, until today.
Today, Saturday, February 20, 2021, Cheptegei has “fallen in things.” The record-breaker has inked a sponsorship deal with Uganda’s biggest telecom company MTN that is going to last for a full year, and is aimed at sponsoring Cheptegei’s charitable foundation.
“MTN announces annual sponsorship for record-breaking athlete Joshua Cheptegei. As part of the sponsorship, money will go towards his foundation that is working to develop and provide a platform for young and budding athletes. A performance package has also been announced,” MTN tweeted.
The performance package, this website has come to learn, is worth Shs100 million that MTN is going to inject into Cheptegei Foundation over a period of one year.
After signing the multimillion deal, Cheptegei was as humble as always as he shared the news on his official Twitter page, tweeting: “I am delighted and honoured to announce my partnership with MTN. They have been a true supporter of running for many years in Uganda and I am proud to say they will now support both me and the Joshua Cheptegei Foundation.”
To return the favour, Cheptegei also gifted the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Wim Vanhelleputte with an autographed kit from his running team known as NN Running Team.
MTN has in the past supported numerous sports activities in Uganda from sponsoring the national football team for several years, to introducing the MTN marathon and acquiring the KCCA FC stadium naming rights last year.
