Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) stalwart Rtd Dr. Kizza Besigye and his counterpart Samuel Lubega Mukaku, who is the Rubaga South Member of Parliament, have been denied bail by court and further remanded to Luzira Prisons.
Besigye and Mukaku were arrested on Tuesday from down Kampala where they were protesting increasing commodity prices.
They were driven to Nagalama Police station where they were charged with inciting violence and consequently detained.
On Wednesday evening they were arraigned at Buganda Road Chief Magistrates court at around 6:00PM and remanded till today when they were to return for hearing of their bail application.
However, when they were arraigned in court today, the Magistrate rejected their bail application citing that the two accused were granted bail a week ago.
The magistrate said he wouldn’t accept court to be turned into a theatre of politics by Besigye and Mukaku, before remanding them until July 1st, when they will return for another hearing of their application.
It should be noted that Besigye was granted cash bail of Shs3M on June 7th after spending several days in jail.
Besigye had been charged on May 25 with inciting violence after being detained a day earlier in the capital Kampala as he rallied supporters to protest against soaring commodity prices.
He had earlier on been asked by court to pay cash bail of Shs30M a condition he protested through his lawyer Hajj Elias Lukwago, prompting court to revise the amount to Shs3M.
However, shortly after being released on bail Besigye vowed to resume the protest he dubbed ‘Red Card’ and that was how he ended up being arrested.
