At least 14 people have been confirmed dead and several others sustained injuries after a trailer rammed into a commuter taxi along the Masaka-Kyabakuza Road, on Thursday morning.
According the Uganda Red Cross, many of the casualties were passengers in the commuter taxi, although numbers for both vehicles are yet to be established.
“@KampalaTraffic & UGRedcross teams that have responded to road traffic accident at Masaka – Kyabakuza road this morning involving commuter taxi and trailer. 14 dead and accorded dignified handling, referrals (number not confirmed),” Uganda Red Cross tweeted Thursday morning.
By the time of filing this story, the traffic police from Kampala and Masaka Police had already kicked off investigations into the matter in a bid to establish what could have caused the accident.
The injured were rushed to Masaka Regional Hospital for quick medical attention, while the deceased were taken to the mortuary where their identifications can be sorted out before the police hands them to relatives for burial.
The police have since called upon Ugandans who they suspect could have been a victim in the accident or is missing, to come forward and avail their records.

It should however be noted that Masaka Road has over the past few years turned into a deadly stretch for travelers as a result of numerous traffic accidents.
