At least five inmates have bee confirmed to have died on Monday morning after they got involved in a fatal accident that occurred at Nalongo village, along the Kampala-Gulu Highway.
Eyewitnesses reveal that the horrible incident occurred after the prisons truck which was driving inmates, lost control and collided with another vehicle that was coming from the opposite direction.
Several of the injured inmates were rushed to nearby health centres for medical attention while the dead were returned to prison such that the bodies could be processed before being handed over to their relatives for burial.
We have since established that on board were 54 Prison inmates and 12 warders.
Some of the prisons warders sustained injuries but none of them died.
It is not yet clear where the prisoners were being driven to by the time the accident happened but sources reveal that they were from Butuntumula Prison in Luwero district.
However, neither the police nor the Uganda Prisons Services (UPS) had issued a statement about the incident by time of filing this article.
