Luca Annancio, the Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been killed today by unknown attackers while on a visit to the volatile eastern Congo.
According to a statement released by a UN agency, Lucca Atanansio, an unidentified embassy officer, and a World Food Program driver are the three people who died when attackers opened fire on their convoy in Virunga national park near the eastern city of Goma.
Other people who were travelling with them also sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
Writing on Facebook after the shocking news, Italy’s Foreign Affairs Minister Luigi Do Mario said, “The circumstances of this brutal attack are not yet known and no effort will be spared to shed a light on what happened.” The Italian highest diplomat went on to describe the victims as servants of the state.
Carly Nzanzu the Eastern Congo province governor told journalists that the ambassador had died as a result of serious gun injuries and that the attackers immediately fled the scene after attacking the World Food Program convoy.
Eastern Congo political analysts suspect that the attackers’ motive was to kidnap the UN personnel.
