Janzi Awards Launches Caleb Akandwanaho Salim Saleh Honorary Award

The celebrated and highly anticipated inaugural Janzi Awards, yesterday launched the Caleb Akandwanaho Salim Saleh Award at a colorful and glamorous ceremony attended by Uganda’s who’s who in the film and music industry.

The live red-carpet event, the first of its kind for Uganda’s entertainment industry, had several high-profile Government officials in attendance, led by Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, Government Chief Whip, who was also the Guest of Honour.

In appreciation of his immense support to the Ugandan Creative and Performing Arts industry, the Janzi Awards Academy (JAA) has honoured Retired Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho Salim Saleh with the first ever Caleb Akandwanaho Salim Saleh Award.

While handing over the award on Sunday (yesterday) during the ceremony at the Kololo Independence Grounds, Ms. Sylvia Owori, the Chairperson of the Janzi Awards Organising Committee, and also Director of Operations at Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), said;

“This is an honorary award that is bestowed upon Gen. Saleh by the Janzi Awards Academy (JAA) for his outstanding contribution to the Creative and Performing Arts industry in Uganda.  The JAA chose Gen. Salim Saleh due to his tireless efforts in helping to streamline and organise the industry and for unlocking its potential for job and wealth creation as well as export earnings and overall social-economic transformation.”

Owori added, “The General’s support, dedication and commitment to ensuring the industry thrives is recognized and appreciated by the industry members and those who have benefited from his tireless efforts thus far. It is my hope other Ugandans who enjoy the works of our creatives, artists and performers are inspired to support the industry from their own spaces.”

The JAA Board of Directors selects the honourees from a variety of individuals outside the industry who have made a significant mark and contribution to the creative and performing arts industry and enabled its growth. It is named in honour of its first recipient Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho Salim Saleh.

Gen. (Rtd) Caleb Akandwanaho Salim Saleh is the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) and the Presidential Adviser on Military Affairs.

OWC has been a key partner and coordinator of state and non-state actors in support of the Janzi Awards facilitating meetings, trainings, and other consultative engagements with different stakeholders in the Cultural, Creative and Performing Arts Sector with the main aim to explore ways of streamlining the sector and unlock its potential for wealth creation.
