Last night, news broke out that Tanzania President John Pombe Magufuli had passed on in a hospital in Dar-es-Salaam where he had been receiving treatment. The news of Magufuli’s passing was announced by Vice President Samia Suluhu on national broadcaster TBC.
“It is with deep regret that I inform you that today. We lost our brave leader, the president of the Republic of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli,” Vice-President Samia said in the announcement adding that there would be 14 days of national mourning and flags would fly at half-mast.
As condolence messages pour in from Tanzanian political leaders, the public, regional leaders in East Africa and others all over the world, neighbours Kenya have declared a week-long mourning period for the demise of the fallen leader.
While addressing the nation this morning, Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta eulogised his Tanzanian counterpart.
“As the President of Kenya, I do hereby order and direct seen days of mourning and flags to be flown at half-mast across Kenya and all our diplomatic missions abroad,” Kenyatta said on national TV.
