Although Ugandans seem to have forgotten about the existence of COVID-19 and are going about their usual business the way they did before the pandemic, COVID-19 is very much still around and people are still losing their life because of it.
The latest notable person to succumb to the deadly coronavirus is Mathias Turyasingura, who has been the District Police Commander (DPC) of Kira Road Police Station.
According to information received by Exposed Uganda, Turyasingura breathed his last from Mulago National Specialised Hospital in Kampala yesterday, Tuesday, May 25, 2021, where he had been admitted for several days after being diagnosed with the disease.
The Police Political Commissar, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Asan Kasingye has talked about the deceased as a patriotic and disciplined police officer who fought crime with zest and zeal.
“You were a good commander, patriotic, disciplined and always concerned with the welfare of your officers. DPC, you fought crime in Kira Road with zest & zeal. Rest In Peace comrade. #SPTuryasinguraMathias,” Kasingye eulogised on Twitter.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases recorded in Uganda stands at 44,074. Of these, 43,401 have recovered while 358 have succumbed to the disease. There are 140 active cases still admitted in the hospital and the Ministry of Health has called upon Ugandans to observe the prevention measures put in place because the ICU sections in health facilities are almost overwhelmed.
