Congratulations are in order and jubilation has already kicked off in Hoima after their local club Kitara Football Club got promoted to next season’s StarTimes Uganda Premier League (UPL).
Kitara overcame Kiboga Young (formerly Mbale Heroes) with a 1 – nil victory to seal promotion, a goal that was scored by their star forward Brian Muluuli Mayanja in the 55th minute at FUFA Technical Center in Njeru.
Kitara complete the trio that has been promoted to the 2020/21 UPL, the other two clubs being Malaba Youth Development Association (MYDA) FC and army side Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) FC whose promotion was confirmed when FUFA cancelled the Big League in May this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The FUFA Big League is the second tier of Ugandan club football from which three teams are promoted to the UPL and the three bottom clubs from the UPL are relegated to this Big League.
The 2020/21 UPL is expected to kick-off on November 20, 2020, pending clubs’ fulfilment of COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) put in place by the Ministry of Health, which include testing of all footballers and staff 72 hours before kick-off, and bi-weekly thereafter.
