Mbarara Mosque Closed After Muslims Wash Body Of Kadhi Who Died Of COVID-19 In It

The Ministry of Health on Friday ordered the closure of Mbarara Mosque after Muslims washed the body of the deceased District Kadhi from the mosque  yet he had died of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The directive to close the mosque for two weeks pending fumigation was issued by the District COVID-19 Task Force, which revealed that during the period of closure no prayers will be allowed to be conducted at the mosque until the Ministry declares it safe for congregation again.

Khadi Sheikh Ramadhan Khamis Kadidi succumbed to COVID-19 at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital on Friday.

Sheikh Ramadhan Khamis died at the age of 58 and he had served as the Mbarara district Khadi for close to 5 years

He was also the Imam for Nyamitanga mosque for 26 years and following his demise, he was buried at his ancestral home in Nyamitanga.

However, he became the 10th person to die of COVD-19 in Mbarara District according to records at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.


The directive from Ministry officials also saw several other people who participated in the ritual of washing the  Kadhi’s body  sent to quarantine  for 14 days  such that they can be monitored to establish whether they contracted the infection or not.


Information from the Ministry of Health indicates that Uganda has so far registered 206  COVID-19 deaths, out of 22, 118 cumulative cases infection and 9,117 total recoveries.
