The government of Rwanda has issued a directive suspending the Miss Rwanda beauty pageant over allegations that the models who are contesting in this year’s pageants were sexually assaulted by some of the organisers.
The directives suspending the beauty pageant was issued in a Communique by the Rwandan Ministry of Youth Culture, which indicates that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
The Communique from the Ministry dated May 9th, 2022, issued by the Minister Rosemary Mbabazi, reads in part thus; “Based on ongoing investigation by the Rwanda Investigation Bureau of the CEO of Rwanda Inspiration Backup, over alleged sexual abuse of Miss Rwanda contestants, the Ministry of Youth and Culture informs the general public that the Miss Rwanda beauty pageant has been suspended pending completion of investigations.”
She further revealed that her ministry in conjunction with the Rwanda Culture Heritage Academy will consider looking for a new organizer for the events.
The suspension comes at a time when Dieudonne Ishimwe, who is the Chief Executive of Rwanda Inspiration Backup is undergoing investigations over sexual abuse of several contestants.
Ishimwe was arrested last month by the police and is now facing charges in court.
He is facing three charges including rape, soliciting sexual favors as well as sexual harassment.
