At least one person is confirmed to have died on Wednesday night during a nasty brawl that broke out in a bar in Natete, a city suburb, during curfew hours.
The deceased identified as Magidu Mugwanya, 43, resident of Kibumbiro B Zone, Busega Parish, Rubaga Division in Kampala City, died of gunshot wounds that he sustained during the brawl, although the police wonder how he and other revelers got there because bars were closed last year by government as one of the ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigire, confirmed the incident and said in a statement that the territorial police at Katwe has started investigating the murder that happened at around 10:16pm, in Natete Parish.
“The deceased has been identified as Magidu Mugwanya, 43, resident of Kibumbiro B Zone, Busega Parish, Rubaga Division in Kampala City,” Owoyesigire said.
He added that; “Preliminary investigations have indicated that the deceased could have been shot as a result of an argument at a bar joint belonging to one Patience, who has since been arrested to help police with the investigations. She is also likely to be charged for operating a bar something that is against Covid-19 guidelines issued by the ministry of health.”
He revealed that two pistol cartridges were found at the scene and items from the deceased’s car are part of the exhibits as investigations proceed to identify the suspect.
Owoyesigire said the body of the deceased was conveyed to mortuary for a post mortem as investigations continue.
He also noted that the police shall communicate details of their findings after the investigation, especially who the suspect is and what sparked off the argument.
