Controversial city pastor Martin Ssempa of Makerere Community Church, has landed in trouble for expressing his opinion about holding a beauty pageant with an aim of crowning a model who is HIV+.
Ssempa was dragged to the Equal Opportunities Commission vide case No. EOC/CR/CR/123/2019 by the Centre For Health, Human Rights and Development (CEHURD) and he is set to appear in court on September 8th, 2022 without fail.
The summons for Ssempa was sanctioned on August 19th by the Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC).
Trouble for Ssempa started when he posted the following statement on social media;
“A beauty contest of the prettiest girl with HIV is a campaign to sexualize and make a celebrity out of having a deadly and contagious virus.
In the history of public health, we have never had beauty contests for similar Sexually Transmitted Diseases such as Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Genital Warts, Chlamydia nor Hepatitis B. Can you imagine a Miss Gonorrhea or Miss Genital Warts! That’s just insane.
We must do our best not to celebrate but to discourage our young people from getting HIV/AIDS.”
However, although Ssempa published the statement with all good intentions, he has since landed himself into deep trouble that is likely to negatively impact him and his church.
Ssempa made headlines a few years back after he teamed up with Solomon Male and other pastors to wage war against fellow pastors they claimed were sodomizing boys at their churches.
