The police along the Kampala-Masaka highway have arrested a truck driver after he was found trying to smuggle 14 people to Mbarara District.
The yet to be identified river registration number UBJ 803P was arrested after the traffic police at Nabbingo flagged down the truck which he was driving an on checking it, they discovered that he was smuggling passengers.
ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, confirmed the incident, said that when the passenger were asked where they were going, they told the police that they were heading to Mbarara District and that the driver was charging them between Shs50,000 and 100,000.
“Our Police at Nabingo has today afternoon intercepted a motor vehicle UBJ 803P . Upon search, 14 people were found inside the vehicle,” Owoyesigire said on twitter.
He added that; “When we interrogated the suspects, they have informed police that the driver was taking them to Mbarara District and charging the btn 50 &100k. They are currently detained at Nsangi Police station. More details to be availed.”
It should be noted that when he was announcing a 42-day lockdown in a bid to fight the spread of COVID-19, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni among other measures directed public transport means operators to stop operating and banned the movement of people from one district to another.
However, despite the directive that saw police deploy at all entry points into each district, several people continue to breach the COVID-19 regulations by sneaking from one district into another.
