Police Shoot Suspect Dead For Resisting Arrest, Grabbing Gun

The Police in Mayuge District on Sunday shot dead a suspect who resisted arrest, fought and tried to disarm officers who had been deployed to arrest him.

The case, which is filed at Mayuge Police Station as Murder by shooting vide Mayuge CRB 775 /2021, was reported by Maganda Ezera, the LC 1 chairperson Miyanzi village, Bugoto parish, Mayuge District.

Maganda said that at around 09:2Am in the morning, while at Musubi landing site, Miyanzi village, Bukabooli subcounty, Mayuge district,  No. 32021 Cpl Wandyete, aged 51, the Officer in Charge (OC) Musubi police post  and No. 61098 PC Kataba  Abdallah, acting  on information from a complainant, a one  Osako, vide MYG CRB  508/2021, to wit theft of engine boat Yamaha, went to arrest his co-suspect  namely Kapere Maka Umar, after the police had recovered the exhibit from Dolwe island and  arrested another suspect. 

However, when Wandyete  arrested  Kapere, his brother only identified as Bampalana  grabbed OC Wandyete and attempted to grab the gun from him, which prompted the intervention of fellow officers.

When  Bampalana grabbed the  gun, he  removed the magazine and then Kapere grabbed PC Kataba and in the scuffle Wandyete released three bullets;  one bullet  fatally injured the suspect and the OC on both legs, while the complainant, Osako and another brother of the suspect also sustained injuries.

Kapere died shortly after the scuffle while the other victims were rushed to Nankoma Health Centre IV for medical attention.

The body was later transported by the police to the mortuary at Mayuge Health Centre III for postmortem as investigations continue.

We have established that investigations led by Mayuge DPC Bashir Sibira are already underway and the injured officer has since been transferred to Buluba Hospital for treatment as inquiries into the matter continue.
