The Uganda Police  have opened up about an attack by gunmen that occurred around 4:00Am on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, leaving some officers with injuries.

According to a statement issued by ASP Luke Oweyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO), a team of officers at Nakulabye Police station this morning foiled an attempt to attack their Police station by un identified persons.

“The incident happened today Wednesday at about 4:00Am. It is alleged that one of our officers (names withheld) was on duty as a station guard when he spotted an unidentified armed person approaching the station from the western direction,” Owoyesigire said.

He add that; “The officer immediately discharged bullets towards the alleged attacker forcing him to flee, abandoning an AK47 Magazine with 5 rounds of ammunition.”

He noted that a team of investigators with the help of canines followed the direction the attacker took but unfortunately, they could not successfully trace them.

Owoyesigire revealed that investigations into the matter have commenced aided by CCTV cameras to try to identify the attacker and their movements.

Currently, Nakulabye Police station has been sealed off as forensics detectives comb the scene for evidence.

Meanwhile, the attack follows a spate of attacks on police stations and military installations by unknown gunmen, who in most cases have killed security personnel and fled with guns.

The attack comes weeks after gunmen attacked Busika police station in Luwero district and killed two police officers, injured two others, and made off with two firearms. One of the injured officers later succumbed to the gunshot wounds.

Similar attacks happened on November 14th, 2022, when gunmen attacked a police station in Kyanja, Wakiso District, and a few days later, other gunmen attacked Gaddafi Barracks in Jinja City, where they killed a soldier manning the Quarter Guard and injured another, before fleeing with their guns.
