President Museveni Axes CMI Boss Maj. Gen. Kandiho, Posts Him In War-torn South Sudan

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni,  exercising  his power as the Commander in Chief  (CiC) of the  armed forces, has appointed Maj. Gen. James Birungi to head the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), shortly after knifing Maj. Gen. Abel Kandiho.

According to communication issued by the Lt. Col. Ronald Kakurungu, who is the Acting Spokesperson of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces, the new changes will see Kandiho posted to South Sudan as Head Security Monitoring Mechanism.

Coincidentally however, Kandiho’s knifing comes at the heels of the Rwandan government wanting him arrested and tried for human rights abuse and other crimes against humanity.

This because the Rwandan government has for a long time alleged that Kandiho’s CMI operatives have in custody several Rwandans who are being kept in detention for years without being produced in competent courts of law to face charges against them.

Although the  government and CMI initially denied the allegations, several Rwandan nationals who were in detention have since been deported and others quietly freed, before being driven and dumped at the Rwandan border points in Gatuna and Cyanika.

The democratic row between the two countries resulted in Rwanda closing their borders to Uganda in 2019 and ordering soldiers to shoot dead whoever is caught sneaking across the borders.

Surprisingly however, Kandiho’s knifing comes just days after Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also the Commander Land Forces (CLF) held a private meeting in Kigali, the Capital of Rwanda.

It should also be noted that the United States of America  (USA) last year issued sanctions against  Kandiho and other  top Ugandan military officers over allegations of being involved in human rights abuses.
