President Museveni Mourns Former Minister Aggrey Awori

His excellency president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni  is mourning the unfortunate loss of Prof. Aggrey Awori, the former Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Prof. Awori, who was also  the former Member of Parliament for Samia- Bugwe County, in Busia District, passed away on Monday night at a top city health facility, where he had been batting a string of health complications.

Following Awori’s demise, President Museveni has since expressed his  condolences to the deceased’s family and relatives, making it known to all and sundry that Uganda has lost a gallant patriot.

Museveni sent out the following condolence message to Awori’s family;  “Saddened by Aggrey Awori’s untimely demise. He was a talented sportsman and a distinguished leader who joined me in the NRM to serve the country despite our prior political differences. My thoughts go out to the family, well-wishers, and the Samia Bagwe Community. Mabi muno!”

Aggrey Siryoyi Awori, born 23 February 1939, was a Ugandan economist, politician and Olympic hurdler, who served as Minister for Information and Communications Technology in the Cabinet of Uganda from 16 February 2009 to 27 May 2011.

Prior to that, he represented Samia-Bugwe North, Busia District in the Ugandan Parliament from 2001 until 2006.

Awori, who was also a former presidential candidate, was an outspoken opposition member of parliament for the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) political party.

In 2007, he abandoned the UPC and joined the ruling National Resistance Movement although by the time of his death he was not an active NRM party cadre.

Details about his funeral and burial shall be revealed in out subsequent reports.
