One Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier is confirmed to have died and several others injured as the hunted for a gang of armed inmates who escaped from Singila prison in Moroto District on Wednesday September 16th, 2020
The yet to be identified soldier who was in pursuit of the inmates with other security officers, is suspected to have been shot dead by one of the armed escapees.
We have established that government has since deployed a joint force of UPDF, Police and Uganda Prisons Services guards to hunt down the escapees and a helicopter gunship was deployed for the same operation.

Commenting about the matter, UPDF spokesperson Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso tweeted that; “The operation by UPDF in pursuit of escapees from Singila prison in Moroto to rearrest them and recover the stolen guns continues. The population therefore is advised to stay calm.”

Sources reveal that a number of 219 prisoners from broke out prison and fled with 36 guns before fleeing into Mt. Moroto. During the tentative operation, one inmate was killed, two were arrested while others fled and are being hunted by security forces.
By the time of filing this story the police and Uganda Prisons Services had not yet issued a statement about the matter, although many of the escapees were still at large, armed and dangerous.
