With most football seasons around the world already ended, countries in Europe are preparing for the forthcoming UEFA Euros, while those elsewhere are preparing for international friendlies to test their players and keep them fresh for the world cup qualifiers. Uganda is one of those countries.
The Uganda Cranes have gone through some tough times in the previous months or so like the possibility of having to host their home games in another country, yes, seriously, the sacking of coach Johnathan McKinstry, and the retiring of three senior players Hassan Wasswa, Mike Azira and captain Dennis “Mr Safe Hands” Onyango, among other troubles.
As solutions to other troubles come along, one thing has been solved: the team captain. Yesterday, Uganda Cranes Head coach Abdallah Mubiru summoned a 34-man squad for the international friendly match against South Africa and named longtime servant Emmanuel Okwi as the new Uganda Cranes Captain.
Okwi, who made his international debut in 2009, is one of the long-serving members of the Uganda Cranes. Since then, he has gone on to represent the country 82 times, scoring 26 goals in the process.
“Representing Uganda is a privilege that I don’t take for granted. I am deeply honoured to be named captain by the Ugnd Cranes coach,” Okwi talked about his appointment.
He added, “I appreciate the technical bench and, my teammates, for their trust. I also thank all fans for their continued support for the National team. “
Experienced striker Okwi Emannuel who has played for several clubs in Uganda and Tanzania currently plays for Egyptian side Ittihad Alexandria FC.
The summoned Uganda Cranes squad team will camp at Cranes Paradise Hotel in Kisaasi on Sunday, May 30, 2021, at 8 am. Training starts on Monday, May 31, 2021, at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.
