Grief and shock have gripped members and supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) after one of their candidates in the 2021 election perished on Friday in an accident that occurred along the Mbarara- Masaka highway.
Badru Katongole, who was the aspiring Member of Parliament for Bukoto Central, on NUP ticket, died after a vehicle he was traveling in with others lost control, veered off the road and rolled several times.
Sources within the party revealed to this website that Katongole died on spot, although by press time it was not yet clear whether he was traveling alone or with some other mourners in the ill-fated vehicle.
We have since established that at the time of the accident. Katongole was driving to Mitooma District to attend the burial of fallen Islamic scholar Sheikh Dr. Anas Kaliisa, who died mid this week.
By press time the police had reached the scene and taken Katongole’s body to Kyazanga Hospital mortuary for post-mortem as investigations into what could have caused the fatal accident continue.
The leadership of NUP is however yet to issue a statement about Katongole’s demise and whether they will front another candidate for the Bukoto Central MP race or not, although party leader and presidential contender Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine has since sent out condolences to the deceased’s family.
