The Sweden envoy to Uganda Ulrika Lindberg-Labasauskas died in a nasty motor accident that occurred at Magamaga bridge, along the Iganga-Jinja road.
It is not yet clear what caused the accident but preliminary police investigations have so far pointed to a head-on crash with a Fuso that was coming from the opposite direction.
Ulrika was attached to SIDA, a Swedish government agency for development cooperation in Africa as a Program Specialist.
Eyewitnesses reveal that she died on spot while other passengers who were in the same car with her were rushed to nearby hospitals by rescuers from the Red Cross in critical health condition as investigations continue.
The embassy of Sweden in Uganda eulogised the deceased thus; “Today the Embassy mourns the loss of our dear colleague Ulrika Lindberg Labasauskas who tragically lost her life in a road accident yesterday.
Ulrika was a wonderful friend and a highly appreciated diplomat dedicated to the protection of human rights, the promotion of gender equality and deepening of democracy, and she will for always be in our hearts. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.”
The deceased joined the Sweden Embassy in Uganda in 2019 and has been efficiently executing her duties since then.
Her death however comes a few days after a Spanish journalist Summy Sudurni, who was popularly known as Summy, died in a terrible accident that occurred in Kiryandongo District, although the police are yet to issue an official statement about the incident.
