The State Minister for Labour Mwesigwa Rukutana, who was arrested last week for shooting at supporters of his opponent in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Rushenyi County Member of Parliament primaries Naome Kabasharira, has been granted bail.

One of the shooting victims who narrowly cheated death was identified as Dan Rweiburingi Kiriyo, who was Kabasharira’s campaign agent.

Credible sources reveal that Rukutana was granted cash bail of Shs4M by the Ntungamo Chief Magistrate Court where his lawyers led by counsel Owen Murangira had applied for bail. The Chief Magistrate, Ms Sarah Mponye Kolya, bonded his three sureties on a noncash bail of Shs50 million each.

He also allegedly damaged a vehicle belonging to Moses Muhumuza.

Prosecution further alleges that Rukutana and others still at large threatened violence against Muhumuza, Nuwamanya, Stuart Kamukama, and Rweiburingi, although he denied the allegations.

Rukutana  was arrested together with three of his escorts although by press time it was not clear yet whether they had been granted bail too or they were still in detention.
