At least four people are confirmed to have died and several others sustained injuries after a Tata truck lost control and overturned in Najjembe township, in Buikwe District, along the Jinja-Kampala Road.
According to ASP Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson, the accident involved a Tata lorry registration number UAX 660C and commuter taxi.
Butoto said in a statement that; “The lorry which was moving from Jinja towards Kampala, tried to dodge a head-on collusion with a taxi which was overtaking another vehicle. However, it knocked five pedestrians in the process, killing four on spot, and seriously injured one.”
She added that; “The deceased have been identified as Akumu Faith female aged 23 years, a resident of Nsakya A’ zone in Najjembe Division, Buikwe district, Anyango Rose, a juvenile aged 14 years and a resident of Najjembe in Buikwe district, Awori Promise, also a juvenile aged 1 year and 8 months and daughter of the deceased (Akumu Faith) and Kimono Shamila aged 3 years.”
She noted that the injured person was identified as Ojara Eric, aged 8 years.
Traffic police from Najjembe Police Station reached the scene in time to convey the bodies of the victims to Kawolo Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Meanwhile, Butoto revealed that the driver of driver fled immediately after the accident and a hunt for the driver is already on such that he can help the police with investigations.
