The police in Kampala on Thursday arrested two men who were found in possessions of teargas canisters, a police bullet proof vest, a Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) uniform, sharp knives, among other things.
The suspected criminals, who have since been identified as John Lwansingo and Dan Ssekayombya were arrested in Kakiri, Wakiso District, as they tried to drive past a roadblock.
However, on searching their car, the policemen manning the roadblock were shocked to land on the teargas canisters, army Ponjo (sleep kit) and police bullet proof vest.
“Lwansingo John and Ssekayombya Dan residents of Nansana and Mwera respectively, have been intercepted by Police in Kakiri this evening. Upon search in their motor vehicle , they were found in possession of police body armour , teargas canisters, Knives and knives.
The two are currently detained at Kakiri Police station as investigations go on,” the Kampala Metropolitan police revealed in a statement published on social media.
However, on asking the suspects how the teargas canisters, army uniform and police vest came into their possession Lwansingo and Ssekayombya, who admitted they were not security operatives, could not give a satisfactory answer, which prompted the police to suspect the two to have attacked security personnel and stolen the items from them.
The two were promptly booked into custody for interrogation and will arraigned in court to be charged with illegal possession of government stores when investigations into their matter are completed by the police.
