The country has run out of COVID-19 vaccines at a time when the number of people dying as a result of the pandemic is increasing.

Information coming in from the Ministry of Health indicates that the 175,200 doses of vaccines which the country received recently through the COVAX  initiative have since been used up.

Officials from the Ministry of Health revealed that the vaccines were used to fascinate frontline and other essential workers who received the first jab but had not received the second one after the last vaccination exercise.

The country is expected to receive another batch of vaccines towards  the end of this month, according to the Ministry publicist Emmanuel Ainebyona.

The country on June 16, 2021 received 175,200 new COVID-19 vaccines with support from United Nations Children’s Fund and French Embassy under the World Health Organization (WHO) COVAX initiative.

According to information from the Ministry of Health, results of COVID-19 tests done on 08 July 2021 confirmed 615 new cases, bringing the cumulative confirmed cases are 86,755, out of which 2090 have died, while 6,392 patients have responded to treatment and recovered.

The number of COVID-19 deaths has since increased to over 2000

Uganda had run out of vaccines for its vaccination campaign targeting priority groups, with several hospitals and vaccination centers across the country reporting stock outs.

Uganda received 864,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine via the COVAX facility and 100,000 doses from the Indian government in March.

At least 688,000 more doses are expected from the COVAX facility in early August and 300,000 doses of China’s Sinovac COVID-19 vaccines next month, according to the ministry of health.

Uganda is currently battling the second wave of COIVD- 19 which attacked the country last month, leading to an upsurge in the number of infections and rate of deaths.

According to government statistics, the Ministry of Health requires at least 45 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to get the country’s entire population vaccinated, plus extra doses to cater for the refugee population in Uganda.
