The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) on Wednesday August 19, 2020, arrested a man said to be a veteran for wearing a People Power face mask to prevent the spread of COVID-19, plus a red beret bearing the photo of 2021 presidential contender Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.

The yet to be identified man, who claims to be an army veteran was arrested after photos of him wearing a UPDF uniform with Bobi Wine beret and red People Power mask went viral on social media.

Following the wide circulation of his photos, the army leadership was quick to come out  and clear the air by revealing that the UPDF is non-partisan and does not engage in partisan politics.

The unidentified who had a People Power mask and red beret

Brig. Gen. Flavia Byekwaso, the UPDF Spokesperson, tweeted thus about the matter;

“A picture of an unidentified individual in UPDF dress, with unclear name tag and covered shoulder lapels and with a people power beret and mask was posted on social media, to cheaply and desperately portray some members of the force as partisan.”

She added that; “The UPDF takes strong exception to this criminal scheme and already investigations are underway to establish the identity and apprehend the culprit who is not a member of the UPDF @cdfupdf.”

However, by press time the UPDF had not yet announced the charges to be preferred against the suspect as he was still being interrogated about his motives for doing such a thing.
