WhatsApp users of certain older iPhone and Android models must back up their messages and update to iOS 9 or Android 4.0.3 if they want to keep using the popular messaging service in 2021

The popular messaging service will stop working on particular older models unless they upgrade their Apple latest operating system.

The messenger app will no longer be supported by certain smartphone models that are not running iOS 9 or Android 4.0.3 operating systems, from January 2021. This primarily include the iPhone 4, and all earlier models.

If you have iPhones iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6S, all you have to do to get WhatsApp is to update your software to iOS 9.

If you have one of the affected handsets and do not want to lose your chats, you are advised to back up your WhatsApp messages so they will not be lost.

To do this, open the chat you want to save and click on ‘Group Info’. You will then need to click ‘Export Chat’ – and you will be given the option to download the chat with our without media.

The news has emerged just a month after it was revealed that a handy new service was coming to the popular messaging app. WhatsApp is introducing a ‘disappearing messages’ option that will erase chats from the phone of both the sender and recipient after seven days.

The Facebook-owned app, which has two billion users worldwide, said the setting would help keep chats private.

In a blog, the company said messages could be set to expire after seven days to offer “peace of mind that conversations aren’t permanent, while remaining practical so you don’t forget what you were chatting about.”
